黄巢灭，僖宗得以回长安，嘉奖了李克用等将领。晋王李克用巡狩河南，大军行到汴梁城泥脱岗，传令安营，等存孝的兵来到。汴梁节度使朱温，欲报昔年鸦馆楼夺带之仇，于是定下毒计，设宴请李克用，等其赴宴时，再杀死他。李克用不停众人劝说，前往赴宴，结果收下将领皆忘。正当李克用命悬一线时，李孝存赶到，将其从危难之中解救出来。这朱温见一计不成，又生一计。他造谣李孝存谋反，害得李孝存被五牛分尸。朱温见主上衰弱，时势已去，要图天下，于是在汴梁盖造皇城，请陛下迁都汴梁。僖宗被田令孜乘夜劫出了长安，后被饿死，昭宗匆匆继位。后昭宗被逼让位给朱温，朱温即位，称号太祖皇帝。
曹州赤墙村村民黄宗旦，世为盐商，娶妻田氏回家，从巢林经过，见一小儿席地而坐，身穿黄衣，叫田氏为娘，化一道黄气冲入田氏怀中，田氏归即有孕，怀胎二十五月，一日诞下，即黄巢。后来，黄巢听说长安大开武试，招募英才，果中武举状元。僖宗见黄巢面容丑陋大怒，于是革退不用。黄巢怒而发誓，要夺唐朝天下。黄巢从藏梅寺起手，聚饿夫兵百万，一路杀进长安。僖宗逃离长安，远迁于西蜀。他一心想恢复大唐，于是启用晋王李克用。李克用起兵入中原，横扫黄巢军，一路杀回长安、黄巢见大势已去，自刎而亡。
